Employee Stories: Peter, Utah Project Engineer

Peter grew up in Buffalo, Minnesota. His father, a mechanical engineer, influenced him to pursue a career in engineering. Peter attended Michigan Technological University, where he studied near the shores of Lake Superior. After graduating, he relocated to Utah with his girlfriend, Emma, and applied for a job with Janicki. Peter has worked as a Project Engineer for the past year, focusing on machining detailed metallic parts for aerospace, defense and other industries.

Driving Engineering Excellence

Peter’s work is dynamic and diverse. His day-to-day tasks range from building engineering packages based on customer requirements to sourcing materials, overseeing parts machining, ensuring quality and managing corrective actions. Peter thrives on the diversity of his responsibilities.

“The variety of what we do keeps things exciting. We work on projects across multiple industries, and within each project, there’s a wide scope of tasks,” states Peter, “I love how the challenges change daily— one day, you’re working at the computer, and the next, you’re spending all day in the mill. No day is ever the same.”

One of Peter’s favorite achievements at Janicki has been his work on detailed parts for a large-scale aircraft assembly.

“I love the complexity of it and seeing how the parts I’ve built fit into the bigger picture. Watching the entire engineering package come to life and integrate it into a real product has been cool,” Peter shares.

Support and Collaboration

During his first year at Janicki, Peter was required to gain new technical and interpersonal skills to manage projects successfully. From technical skills, like learning to design and program machines, to collaborating with different teams, Peter has grown into his role by expanding his skill set and overcoming new challenges.

“The best part of my job is the people,” he says. “We’re a team, and someone will always be there when things get tough. Their support makes all the difference.”

Peter shares some powerful advice for new engineers entering the field: “Be open and know that you have a lot to learn. Some things take time, but with patience and persistence, you’ll master them.” His words are a great reminder to embrace the learning curve, take ownership of their growth and stay resilient in facing challenges.

Utah National Guard

Peter’s military career began in 2018 when he joined ROTC with the intention of funding his college education. Over time, this initial motivation grew into a strong commitment to the community he found within the Army National Guard. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 2022, Peter currently serves as a maintenance control officer for the Utah Army National Guard, overseeing the workflow and maintenance processes within his unit. Through his service experiences, Peter has honed essential skills in leadership, professional communication and critical thinking—qualities he finds highly valuable in the civilian world. While Peter is focused on advancing his career with Janicki, his dedication to the military community remains an enduring part of his professional journey.

Beyond Work

Outside of Janicki, Peter embodies the spirit of adventure. In the winter, he often skis at Snowbasin, Nordic Valley or Brighton. In the summer months, he enjoys hiking in the mountains and fly fishing for trout. His creative side shines through in his love of cooking, which he shares with his girlfriend, Emma. Together, they are fostering a cat, who may end up sticking around as a purr-manent family member.

Warriors Over The Wasatch Air Show 2024

A B2 Bomber flies over employees watching the air show

Janicki’s Utah crews experienced an exhilarating spectacle of the Warriors Over The Wasatch Air Show on June 29. This event is held every other year at Hill Air Force Base and Janicki hosts a watch party at our Layton facility. The plant is located adjacent to the base and has a great view of the show. This event brings together Janicki employees and their families for a day filled with awe-inspiring aerial displays and exciting activities.

Thrilling Aerial Displays

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the stunning aerial performances. Employees huddled under tents and packed chairs out behind our facility to view the show. From the precision of the Thunderbirds to the cutting-edge maneuvers of F-35s and the majestic presence of a B-2 Bomber, the skies above Layton were alive with the roar of engines and the thrill of high-flying acrobatics. The explosions and dogfighting routine of Tora Tora Tora were also very exciting!

Family-Friendly Fun

Children playing mini golf

Beyond the air show, plenty of activities entertained everyone throughout the day. Mini golf and giant chess provided a relaxing break between flights, while a Lego truck sparked creativity among younger attendees. Balloon Man Shan delighted children with face painting and intricate balloon art, adding colorful fun to the event.

Delicious Catering and Cool Treats

Red Beard BBQ served up mouthwatering barbeque that satisfied appetites, while Dole Whip offered refreshing ice cream treats to beat the summer heat. There were plenty of goodies to be found!

Employee Stories: Nick, Production Technical Lead

Nick, a production technical lead on the Metals Value Stream team at the Utah site, recently celebrated his 8th anniversary with Janicki. His interest in aerospace and technical work began when he enlisted in the Army in 2008, a passion that he continues to bring to his role at Janicki.

Nick served several critical roles for the Army and National Guard, primarily focused on maintaining Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters. Nick has been deployed twice, once from 2008-2009 and a second time while he was working at Janicki, from 2018-2019.

In 2015, a friend referred him to Janicki. The idea of working on the opposite side of the spectrum from his service was very exciting. Nick started as a mill tech machining composite skins and other fly-away parts in Mills 7 and 8 in Utah. The similarities between his service and work at Janicki are very obvious, where safety, quality, and foreign object debris (FOD) control are all top priorities. That overlapping focus allowed Nick to flourish at Janicki, where he had a short stint as Mill 7 cell manager before his second deployment in 2018, and then upon returning from Iraq as the Assembly 5 cell manager for over four years.

Nick has been in the production technical lead role since 2022 and is also working on quality assurance training to expand his skills. He enjoys the culture and the people he works with and learns from daily.

“I love what I do and want to come to work every day,” states Nick. “I am honored to have the opportunity to grow and help move our needle with each new project.”

Nick’s most memorable experience at Janicki has been witnessing two rocket launches from Cape Canaveral while performing on-site work at a customer’s Florida assembly facility.

“The sight, sound and feeling of the reverberations in my chest are something I will never forget,” said Nick.

When Nick isn’t machining the largest and most challenging parts in the aerospace industry, he is finding every chance he can to escape to the mountains. He loves fly fishing and camping with his daughter, Brinlynn (12), and dog, Luke.

Janicki is committed to hiring active-duty service members, veterans, and reservists transitioning to civilian work. Learn more at www.janicki.com/veterans.
